How did King Louis XIV populate New France?

Louis XIV did not attempt to directly populate New France. King Louis XIII founded New France in 1634. While Louis XIV sent French immigrants and soldiers to New France over the course of his reign, the primary means of populating the territory were the "Filles du Roi" ("King's Daughters"), the coureurs des bois or coureurs de bois ("runners of the woods").
