Why the US support Hungarians in their 1956 revolt?

While the United States verbally condemned the Soviet Union's actions following the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, it did not provide military assistance to the Hungarian rebels. The US did, however, provide political and diplomatic support, as well as humanitarian aid to the displaced Hungarians.
