How to Travel From the Santa Lucia Train Station Via Water Taxi

Water taxis or "motoscafi," as they are called in Venice, are a scenic and luxurious way to navigate the canal-filled city. More like a water limo than taxi, the interior of each boat features wood paneling and leather seating. (See Reference 1) While there is no bar, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the canal and surrounding buildings from the open-air seats in the front of the boat.

Venice's narrow, winding and generally confusing side streets can be very difficult and time-consuming for visitors to navigate, so traveling by water is typically the most direct way to arrive at your destination.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk out the main door of the train station and straight towards the water. Look for white arches with "water taxi" written in English in black text on a white sign.

    • 2

Stand in the queue on the gangway until a water taxi is available for you. Only take a taxi that has a yellow stripe and license number. Do not accept offers for rides from unlicensed taxi operators on other parts of the pier.

    • 3

Before you agree on a price, make sure your taxi driver knows where your hotel or destination is and is able to get there. Some hotels are not accessible from the main canals.

    • 4

Settle on your price before boarding the water taxi. Licensed water taxis will operate by posted fare guidelines, but be sure you know the fare and have that amount in euros available before setting out.

    • 5

Once you are on board, prepare appropriate footwear for disembarking. There is often a significant gap between where the boat stops and the pier or disembarkation site. If you are wearing slippery shoes or high heels, change during the ride into sturdier footwear.
