Before the opening of the Suez canal, the ships trading between Europe and India used to travel through the Cape of Good Hope, which added additional 7000 km to their journey. With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, ships could now travel directly between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, significantly reducing the travel distance.
