Weekend Trips to Florence

Florence, Italy evokes romance, incredible artwork and the glory of the Renaissance. From designer shopping and museums to homemade Italian meals and fine wines, Florence offers the traveler a wealth of experiences. If you only have a weekend to see the sights, concentrate on the major tourist destinations: Galleria degli Uffizi, Galleria dell'Accademia, Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti and Giardano di Boboli. Book attraction tickets and dinner reservations in advance to maximize your time in Florence.
  1. Museums and Palaces

    • "David" is one of the city's renowned works of art.

No trip to Florence is complete without visiting the Galleria degli Uffizi, home to works by Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Boticelli, including "The Birth of Venus." Michelangelo's masterpiece "David" is housed in the Galleria dell'Accademia, which displays Florentine artwork from the 13th through 16th centuries. Book tickets for both museums in advance online or anticipate a wait of two hours or more to enter. The Palazzo Pitti is a grand palace featuring art and costume galleries as well as the beautiful Giardano di Boboli, or Boboli Gardens.

    Duomo

    • The Duomo dominates Florence's skyline.

The Duomo, officially known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori, is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Florence with its enormous, red-tiled dome. The cathedral is the fourth-largest in the world. Climb Giotto's Campanile, adjacent to the cathedral, to see a breathtaking view of the city. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is home to artwork and sculptures removed from the Duomo; Michelangelo's Pieta is a highlight.

    Shopping

    • Shop along the historic Ponte Vecchio.

Florence is home to high-fashion Italian designers such as Gucci, Prada and Pucci. Visit their stores along the posh Via Tornabuoni. The Mall, located on the outskirts of the city, offers deals on designers including Fendi, Gucci, Burberry and Valentino. Florence specializes in locally made leather goods such as jackets, purses and wallets. Visit the San Lorenzo Market and Piazza Santa Croce for these items, and use your haggling skills. The Ponte Vecchio, Florence's oldest bridge, is lined with jewelry shops specializing in gold and gems. Take a walk across the bridge and enjoy the views, even if you aren't planning to shop.

    Food and Wine

    • Experience Tuscan wine and cuisine in Florence.

From quaint family-owned trattorias and bustling pizza joints to fine dining experiences under the stars, Florence offers the tourist a wide range of dining options. Avoid tourist trap restaurants with waiters trying to encourage passersby to come inside. Instead make reservations in advance at a ristorante; check Fodors or another travel guide for detailed recommendations by price range and neighborhood. Stop by a gelato shop after dinner and stroll through a piazza with your treats, or try one of Tuscany's vinos at a Florentine wine bar.
