Memorial Day Weekend Trips

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day when the entire nation gets together to remember, reflect and honor those who while in military service. This national holiday dates back to the Civil War era when woman were recorded to have gone from gravesite to gravesite decorating them to honor the fallen soldiers. It was on May 5, 1968 when General John Logan, the national commander of the grand Army of the Republic, officially declared Memorial Day as a holiday. Celebrated the last Monday in May, Memorial Day weekend offers a chance to get away for an extended weekend.
  1. Washington, D.C.

    • Take the family on an educational trip this Memorial Day weekend for a visit to the nation's capitol, Washington, D.C. Witness the three-hour National Memorial Day Parade at the National Mall. Before and after the parade, visit the monuments within the Mall, including the Washington Memorial, Korean War Memorial's Reflection Wall and the Lincoln Memorial. Stop at the White House and the Smithsonian Museums located throughout the D.C. area, or take a walking tour with a local tour guide for a in-depth look into the county's history. Later, take a short drive over to Arlington Cemetery where you and your family can honor those who served in the military.

    Walt Disney World

    • Take the family to Florida for a three-day weekend with Mickey Mouse and friends at the Walt Disney World Resorts. While there, enjoy everything the resorts and theme parks have to offer, including live entertainment, recreational facilities and plenty of relaxation. Spend your weekend at one of Disney's Moderate Resorts, such as Disney's Caribbean Resort, Disney's Coronado Resort and Disney's Port Orleans Resort. The moderate resorts offer more family things to do, such as larger pools, children's activities, spa services (at select moderate resorts) and multiple dining locations. Take a bus to Downtown Disney Friday evening after you arrive. While at Downtown Disney, enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment venues, or take a trip into the skies over Walt Disney World aboard Characters in Flight, a tethered balloon ride. At Walt Disney World, spend a day or two at the theme parks. The rest of the time, enjoy the resort and its amenities.

    Colonial Williamsburg

    • Colonial Williamsburg is in the heart of America's beginning, and offers a place to visit and remember our ancestors with living historical displays. Known as the Historic Triangle of Virginia, the past has been preserved in Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown, which can be visited in a single Memorial Day Weekend trip. The area offers award-winning tours of homes, historical sites and battlefields with trained, knowledgeable and appropriately-dressed tour guides. While staying in Williamsburg, choose accommodation close to the center activities, such as the Best Western Historic Area, the Days Inn Historic Area and The Historic Powhatan Resort. These hotels put you within walking distance to many of the historical sites in the area. If you want to escape history for one day, visit Busch Gardens or Water Country. Other attractions in the area include the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum, the Lee Hall Mansion, The Mariner's Museum and the Virginia Air and Space Museum.

    Las Vegas

    • If you are single or do not have the kids for Memorial Day weekend, have an adult-only weekend in Sin City. Pack your bags and head to Las Vegas for a weekend filled with live entertainment, relaxing spa services, elite night clubs and gambling. Arriving in Las Vegas Friday evening and stay in a hotel along the Strip, so you are within walking distance to the action, which goes on 24 hours because the city never sleeps. Take a break from your vacation in Vegas and head to Lake Mead to see the Hoover Dam. You can either sign up for a tour at your concierge desk or, if the budget allows, hire a limousine for a round trip ride to the Dam. Daily tours at the Hoover Dam are open to the public with or without a tour from Las Vegas.
