The museum is located in the former du Pont home and features 175 rooms complete with historic architecture. The galleries include various mediums such as furniture, ceramics, textiles, paintings and prints, and contain over 85,000 pieces. One of the most popular galleries, the Dorrance Gallery, includes an exhibit on the Campbell Collection of Soup Tureens. The Yuletide display features elaborate Christmas trees and arrangements.
Henry Francis du Pont had a great passion for gardening, and even after he donated his home in 1951, he retained ownership of the garden, and continued working in it until his death in 1969. The garden boasts 1,000 acres of streams, meadows and forests, and blooms from late January through November.
Winterthur is open six days a week, from Tuesdays through Sundays, and closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The museum offers various tours and packages. As of November 2010, tickets for the tours are sold until 3:15 p.m. with the last tour beginning at 3:30. The library is open from 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Fridays, except for holidays that fall on Mondays.
