How to Travel Between Spain & Portugal

Like most European destinations, Spain and Portugal are easy to navigate thanks to rail, air and ground transportation. Whether you are traveling to Europe from the United States or are already in Europe and want to tour these two border countries, you can find a variety of travel schedules for your timetable. While small border towns are best explored by bus --- because of time, price and convenience --- larger cities such as Seville, Barcelona and Madrid offer a range of affordable travel options to take you to your Portugal destination.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an arrival and departure city. Where you want to travel can determine your mode of transportation. For example, take a train from Faro, Portugal to Madrid, Spain, connecting in Lisbon or Seville. For other destinations, air or bus travel may be more conducive.

    • 2

Take the train. For a multi-city tour of the countries, opt for rail travel, which is better suited for such an itinerary. Purchase a pass, which permits consecutive travel during a specified period of time between Spain and Portugal. Eurail's Portugal-Spain Pass permits unlimited rail travel within and between Portugal and Spain for three to 10 days within two months. Eurail, Euro Railways and Europrail offer railway passes online and at stations and travel agencies.

    • 3

Choose a bus tour. Like rail travel, bus tours can allow you to see multiple spots throughout each country. The Euroline pass permits bus travel to 43 cities throughout Europe, including Portugal and Spain, as of October, 2010.

Rent a car. If organized tours are not your speed, renting a car will provide the freedom to explore at your pace. Auto Europe rents vehicles and places no limits to where you can travel. Rent a car in Spain, and then drive to Portugal.

Fly. For point-to-point travel between Spain and Portugal, opt for air travel, which can be comparable in price to rail travel. Air Europa offers a variety of destinations in Spain and Portugal. Passengers traveling on Avro airlines can fly into any of 14 destinations in Spain and Portugal. Online discounts are available on Avro's website.
