How to Travel to Iona, Scotland

Iona is a small island off the west coast of Scotland. At its largest point, Iona is three miles long and one mile wide. Iona may be small, but it's a popular destination and can get especially busy in the summer months. Visitors to Iona can tour the abbey and the only village on the island. The Island also is home to two scenic golf courses. With a little planning, a visitor can make the short trip from mainland Scotland to Iona for a lovely day trip or an overnight stay.

  1. Taking the Ferry to Iona

      Go to Oban, Scotland. Oban is on the west coast of Scotland and is less than an hour's drive from Glasglow.

      From Oban, take the 45-minute ferry ride to Craignure. The village is on the Isle of Mull, an island just off the west coast of Scotland. The Oban-Craignure ferry can get very busy, so make reservations and buy tickets in advance. Advance tickets can be purchased from the ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne.

      From Craignure, take the bus to the village of Fionnphort. Bus schedules and ticket information change frequently. Check with the Argyll Bute Council website for the most up-to-date bus information.

      From Fionnphort, take the five-minute ferry ride to Iona. The Fionnphort-Iona ferry can get very busy. Make reservations and buy tickets in advance. Reservations can be made with the ferry operator, Caledonian MacBrayne.
