Has northern Ireland always been separated from Ireland?

Northern Ireland has not always been separated from the Republic of Ireland. The island of Ireland was politically united from 1801 to 1922 as part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, but a partition of the island took place in 1922, creating the Irish Free State (later known as the Republic of Ireland) in the south and Northern Ireland in the north, which remained part of the United Kingdom.
