Why is there a border between northern and southern Ireland?

There is a political border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland which follows the boundary that was established when Ireland was partitioned in 1921: the island was divided into two political entities, with the six north-eastern counties of Ireland becoming Northern Ireland and the remaining twenty-six becoming the Irish Free State, later renamed the Republic of Ireland.
