Counties in Ireland: No "Top 20" Ranking
Ireland has only 26 counties (in the Republic) — not ranked by size/population like US counties.
The 26 Counties (Republic of Ireland)
- Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow
Northern Ireland (UK) — 6 Historic Counties
- Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Tyrone
- Now 11 districts for local government (since 2015)
Why No "Largest Counties" List?
- Not comparable to US: Irish counties are primary administrative divisions (like US states), not sub-state units
- Vastly different scales: Cork (7,500 km²) vs. Louth (827 km²) — but both are "counties"
- Population range: Dublin (1.5M) vs. Leitrim (35K) — same tier
- Function: Local government (councils), not judicial/law enforcement (US county role)
If You Must Rank (Republic Only)
| By Area | By Population (2022) |
| 1. Cork (7,500 km²) | 1. Dublin (1.45M) |
| 2. Galway (6,149 km²) | 2. Cork (580K) |
| 3. Mayo (5,586 km²) | 3. Galway (276K) |
| 4. Donegal (4,861 km²) | 4. Kildare (247K) |
| 5. Kerry (4,807 km²) | 5. Meath (220K) |
But these rankings are not officially used or culturally meaningful in Ireland.
