Ireland's Population: Republic vs. North — Clearing the "Southern Ireland" Confusion
"Southern Ireland" is not a standard political or geographic term. The island of Ireland comprises two distinct jurisdictions:
| Jurisdiction | Status | Population (2022/23 est.) | Capital |
| Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann) | Sovereign state (EU member) | ~5.3 million (CSO 2023) | Dublin |
| Northern Ireland (Tuaisceart Éireann) | Part of United Kingdom | ~1.9 million (NISRA 2022) | Belfast |
Total Island Population: ~7.2 Million
Why "Southern Ireland" Is Misleading
- Used in 1921 Government of Ireland Act (never fully implemented) for the 26-county entity.
- Irish people say "the Republic," "the South" (informal), or "the 26 counties."
- "Southern Ireland" implies a purely geographic split — but the border is political, not latitudinal (e.g., Donegal is north but in Republic).
Demographic Trends
- Republic: Growing (immigration, natural increase). 2022 Census: 5.15M; 2023 est. 5.3M.
- Northern Ireland: Slower growth; aging. 2021 Census: 1.9M.
- Dublin metro: ~2M (40% of Republic).
- Belfast metro: ~670K.
If you need "Ireland" data, specify Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland — or whole island. "Southern Ireland" invites ambiguity.
