A short walk from Eastern Illinois University, the McGrady Inn features an historic structure and appearance. The maple floors and nine-panel stained glass window at the center of the 23-foot sanctuary ceilings come from the original United Brethren Church constructed in 1919. A three-year renovation project updated the structure, which now offers modern amenities including flat-screen TVs, wireless Internet and spacious bathrooms. This local bed and breakfast is a charming alternative to the hotel/motel scene. Built in 1892, this Victorian home is situated on a one-acre lot with a garden and wooded backyard. According to its website, the B&B offers "a casual elegance for guest comfort," offering private baths, keyed entry, individual breakfasts, TV/VCR in each room and a secluded pool. One reviewer called the B&B "quaint" after a stay for her anniversary: "The owners were friendly ... It was a charming little bed and breakfast."

The Osage Inn is another elegant, unique local choice. Located just two miles west of Charleston off Hwy 16, the inn is a restored Civil War-era log house with the comforts of modern amenities. The rustic lodge was built 150 years ago on 50 acres of woodlands. Innkeepers Diane and Gary Cole purchased the house in 1998 and restored it. The house accommodates four adults comfortably, is furnished in mid-19th century antiques, has a full kitchen and spacious bathroom and does not have a TV.
