Emigrating from Ireland: A 10-Point Reality Check
It’s Doable, But Not Automatic
Irish citizens enjoy EU/EEA freedom of movement (for now) and Common Travel Area rights with the UK. Beyond that, every destination has its own gatekeepers.
Ten Hurdles to Plan For
- Visa Regimes: Work, study, family, investor, digital-nomad—each has distinct criteria (salary thresholds, degree recognition, language tests).
- Recognition of Qualifications: Regulated professions (health, engineering, teaching) often require local accreditation—months to years.
- Job Search from Abroad: Time-zone interviews, "local experience" bias, sponsorship reluctance. LinkedIn + Irish diaspora networks help.
- Financial Runway: 6–12 months expenses + relocation costs (visa fees, flights, deposit, furniture). Exchange-rate risk.
- Healthcare Access: EU/UK = reciprocal (EHIC/GHIC). Elsewhere: private insurance mandatory; check pre-existing condition clauses.
- Tax Residency: Irish tax residence ends after 183 days; new country may tax worldwide income. Double-tax treaties critical.
- Housing Crisis Export: Dublin rents follow you to Amsterdam, Toronto, Sydney. Research neighbourhoods before signing.
- Social Integration: Language, cultural codes, making friends as adult. Join clubs, GAA abroad, Meetups, alumni groups.
- Family Logistics: School places, childcare, partner’s visa/rights, elderly care back home.
- Admin Marathon: PPS number closure, bank accounts, driving licence swap, voter registration, consular registration.
