Northern Ireland is a constituent part of the United Kingdom. Its constitutional status is not a matter for England alone to decide. Under the Good Friday Agreement and subsequent legislation, any change—such as unification with the Republic of Ireland—requires the consent of a majority of people voting in Northern Ireland itself. The UK government has committed to respecting that democratic principle.
