Why was new netherland called netherland?

The colony of New Netherland was named after the Netherlands, the home country of the majority of its early settlers. The Dutch began exploring the region in the early 17th century, and they established a number of trading posts and settlements along the Hudson River. In 1624, the Dutch West India Company was granted a charter by the Dutch government to colonize the region, and they named it New Netherland. The colony grew rapidly in the following years, and it became a major center of trade and commerce. However, the Dutch were eventually forced to surrender New Netherland to the English in 1664, and the colony was renamed New York.
