Divorce was not legal in the Republic of Ireland in 1996.

The first referendum to legalize divorce was held in 1995 and the proposal was not passed. It wasn’t until 1996 that a second referendum was held and the proposal passed. Divorce became legal in the Republic of Ireland on June 25th, 1996.
