Do you need an mot in Ireland?
In Ireland, vehicles over four years old must undergo an annual National Car Test (NCT). NCTs are carried out by authorised test centres and check the vehicle's overall safety and roadworthiness. The test covers a range of areas including brakes, lights, tyres, steering, and suspension. If a vehicle passes the NCT, it is issued with a valid NCT certificate which must be displayed on the vehicle's windscreen. If the vehicle fails the test, the owner is required to have the necessary repairs carried out and resubmit the vehicle for testing.
Some vehicles are exempted from NCT testing, including vehicles less than four years old and certain agricultural, commercial, and specialist vehicles. Additionally, vehicles that have been imported from outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) must undergo a Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) test before being registered and used on Irish roads.
