Bargain Trips to Ireland

Ireland has an undeniable allure, but the cost of a visit can leave you doing a different kind of Irish reel. Package deals help contain costs by narrowing your choices. Most affordable is "independent" travel, which supplies a car, a map, and specific accommodations; you're your own guide. For a bit more money, escorted trips take care of the gas bill, too. Either way, you can figure air fare as a separate cost.
  1. Independent Travel

    • Take Ireland in at your own pace with a self-guided or independent tour.

My Guide Ireland offers two seven-day, self-guided trips across Ireland in an economy rental car. The Magical Ireland provides accommodations in family-run bed and breakfasts for six nights; the Authentic Ireland package exchanges one of those nights for a one-night stay in an Irish castle. Rates for both packages are per person, based on two travelers, vary by season, and are subject to availability. Magical Ireland is $349 to $545, and Authentic Ireland is $399 to $599 (as of 2010). Airfare is not included.

    Airfare

    • Once in the United Kingdom, it's possible to take a ferry to Ireland if you didn't fly directly.

American Airlines, Aer Lingus, Continental Airlines, Delta, and US Airways all fly from the United States directly to Ireland. Approximately 50 international airlines fly to Ireland, either directly or indirectly. Rates depend on your city of departure, the time of year, and the airline itself.
