What is Rock Eagle Mound?

Rock Eagle Mound is an effigy mound, carved into the earth around AD 1000, in the shape of a bird, commonly mistaken for an eagle but thought by some to be a turkey or a great horned owl, though it is more likely a falcon or a red-tailed hawk. It measures 102 ft (31 m) from wingtip to wingtip and 120 ft (37 m) in length from head to tail. The Rock Eagle Mound is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, in Georgia, within Rock Eagle State Park. This historic site is one of the largest Native American mounds in the US.
