Can a Puerto Rican become president of the US?

The US Constitution has specific eligibility requirements for the president of the United States. According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution, the president must meet the following criteria:

- Natural-born citizen of the United States

- At least 35 years old

- Resident of the United States for at least 14 years

While Puerto Rico is a US territory, it is not a state. People born in Puerto Rico are US citizens, but they are not considered natural-born citizens. Therefore, a person born in Puerto Rico would not be eligible to become president of the United States based on the "natural-born citizen" requirement.

However, there have been proposals to amend the Constitution to allow people born in US territories to become president. In 2008, a constitutional amendment was introduced in the US Senate that would have extended the "natural-born citizen" requirement to people born in US territories, including Puerto Rico. The amendment did not pass, but it could be reintroduced in the future.

If such an amendment were to be passed, Puerto Ricans would be able to become president of the United States, assuming they meet the other eligibility requirements.
