Why did Pancho Villa go to New Mexico in 1916?
In 1916, Pancho Villa led a raid on the town of Columbus, New Mexico, located just across the border from Villa's home base in Chihuahua, Mexico. The raid was in response to the United States' support for his rival, Venustiano Carranza. Villa's forces killed 18 Americans, including civilians and soldiers, and wounded several others. The raid prompted the United States to send a punitive expedition into Mexico led by General John J. Pershing. The expedition failed to capture Villa, and he eventually returned to Mexico.
