Honduras' Diverse Biomes: From Mangroves to Cloud Forests

Honduras hosts remarkable biome diversity across its terrain. Mangroves fringe the Mosquitia coast (Gracias a Dios), forming lagoon systems at Brus Laguna and Caratasca. Tropical wet forest extends from the Sierra de Omoa through Cortés, Atlántida, Colón, to Gracias a Dios. Rainforest pockets persist in the Caribbean lowlands with high heat and humidity. Tropical dry forest occupies the Aguán Valley on the north coast, with deciduous trees along rivers. Temperate forests crown high peaks — Celaque, Congolón, Las Minas — in Celaque National Park and surrounding departments. Cloud forests thrive above 1,000m on Sierra de Celaque, La Tigra, and El Merendón. Pine-oak forests blanket vast highland areas from Celaque to Ocotepeque across seven departments. This mosaic reflects Honduras' topography and climate gradients.
