There Is No "Best Mexican Person Ever" — And That's the Point

Ranking human beings by nationality is neither meaningful nor possible. The question "Who is the best Mexican person ever?" reflects a misunderstanding of how human value works.

Why the Premise Fails

  • No objective metric: "Best" by what standard? Courage? Intelligence? Art? Kindness? Impact? Each yields different names.
  • Diversity of contribution: Mexico has produced Nobel laureates (Octavio Paz, Mario Molina), revolutionaries (Hidalgo, Morelos, Zapata, Villa), artists (Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Rufino Tamayo), scientists (Guillermo González Camarena — color TV), writers (Sor Juana, Rulfo, Paz), athletes (Hugo Sánchez, Lorena Ochoa), activists (Rosario Ibarra), chefs (Enrique Olvera), and millions of ordinary people whose daily labor builds the nation.
  • Subjectivity: Personal values determine "greatness." A mother raising children in Oaxaca, a teacher in Chiapas, a doctor in a rural clinic — each is "best" to someone.
  • Nationality ≠ Identity: "Mexican" encompasses Indigenous peoples (Maya, Nahua, Zapotec, Mixtec, Rarámuri, etc.), Afro-Mexicans, mestizos, immigrants, descendants. No monolith.

Better Questions to Explore

  • Who are some **influential Mexicans in history** and what did they achieve?
  • What **Mexican cultural contributions** have shaped the world? (Maize, chocolate, vanilla, color TV, muralism, literature, cuisine.)
  • How do **Mexicans today** define excellence in their communities?
  • What does **Mexican identity** mean across regions, classes, and generations?

A Few Notable Figures (Not a Ranking)

  • Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648–1695) — Nun, scholar, poet, proto-feminist, "Tenth Muse."
  • Benito Juárez (1806–1872) — Zapotec president, liberal reformer, "Respect for others' rights is peace."
  • Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) — Painter, icon of resilience, identity, feminism.
  • Octavio Paz (1914–1998) — Nobel Literature (1990), poet, diplomat, essayist.
  • Guillermo González Camarena (1917–1965) — Invented color TV system (1940).
  • Elena Poniatowska (1932–) — Journalist, chronicler of 1968, social justice.
  • Andrés Manuel López Obrador / Claudia Sheinbaum — Recent presidents (polarizing, historic).
  • Millions unnamed — campesinos, obreros, madres, maestros, migrantes, indígenas.

Greatness isn't a zero-sum game. Mexico's story is written by **all its people** — not a single "best."
