The first major civilization in Peru, the Norte Chico civilization, arose in the coastal region of Peru around 3000 BC. In contrast, the earliest evidence of human habitation in Mexico dates back to around 23,000 BC. The first major civilization in Mexico, the Olmec civilization, arose in the southern region of Mexico around 1200 BC.
