How far below the surface of Gulf Mexico is BP oil spill?
The BP oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, not below its surface. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded on April 20, 2010, and sank two days later, causing the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The wellhead was located on the seabed, at a depth of approximately 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico.
