Why is the latin quarter so called?

The Latin Quarter of Paris got its name from its historical association with the Sorbonne University, which was established in the 12th century and was the leading educational institution in Europe for many years. The area around the Sorbonne was home to many students, scholars, and intellectuals who spoke Latin, which was the common language of scholarship at the time. Hence, the district came to be known as the "Quartier Latin" or the Latin Quarter.
