Mexico and the Caribbean Sea: Coastal Relationship Clarified

Mexico does not "have" the Caribbean Sea in the sense of ownership or enclosure. Rather, Mexico's eastern coastline borders the Caribbean Sea along the Yucatán Peninsula, making it one of several nations with Caribbean maritime frontage.

Mexico's Caribbean Coastline

  • Length: ~865 km (537 mi) along Quintana Roo state.
  • Key destinations: Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Mahahual, Xcalak.
  • Features: Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (2nd largest globally), cenotes, mangroves, Mayan ruins (Tulum, Cobá).

Caribbean Sea Geography

  • Basin: 2,754,000 km², bounded by Mexico (west), Central America (south), Greater Antilles (north), Lesser Antilles (east).
  • Mexico's EEZ: Extends 200 nm from baseline; overlaps with Cuba, Belize, Honduras, US (Gulf) — delimited by treaties.

Mexico's Other Coasts

  • Pacific: ~7,828 km (Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas).
  • Gulf of Mexico: ~1,743 km (Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán north coast).

Clarification

The Caribbean Sea is an international body of water. Mexico has sovereign rights over its territorial sea (12 nm), contiguous zone (24 nm), and EEZ (200 nm) per UNCLOS. It shares the sea with 12 other sovereign states and several territories. "Having a Caribbean Sea" is imprecise; "having a Caribbean coast" is accurate.
