Latino vs. Hispanic: Understanding the Differences and When to Use Each Term

Latino refers to people from or with ancestry in Latin America (Mexico, Central America, South America, Caribbean). It includes Brazilians (Portuguese-speaking) but excludes Spaniards.

Hispanic refers to people from or with ancestry in Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain and most of Latin America, but excludes Brazil.

In the U.S., the terms are often used interchangeably for the same demographic, but individuals may prefer one based on identity, geography, or political nuance. "Latinx" has emerged as a gender-neutral alternative.

There is no universally correct choice; respect personal preference.
