Why Yemen Is Classified as a Least Developed Country

Yemen's "Third World" (now Least Developed Country/Global South) status stems from compounding crises:

1. Extreme Poverty

~50%+ live below the international poverty line ($2.15/day). War destroyed livelihoods.

2. Protracted Conflict

Civil war since 2014 (Houthi takeover) + Saudi-led intervention (2015) = state collapse, fractured control, no security.

3. Infrastructure Ruin

Roads, ports, power grids, water systems bombed or neglected. Cholera thrives without sanitation.

4. Education Collapse

2M+ children out of school. Literacy ~70% (male) / ~55% (female). Teachers unpaid for years.

5. Healthcare Catastrophe

Half of facilities non-functional. Malnutrition, diphtheria, COVID-19 untreated. Maternal/infant mortality among world's highest.

6. Economic Asphyxiation

Currency split (rival central banks), blocked imports, unpaid salaries, oil exports halted.

Path Forward?

Peace deal + massive reconstruction + governance reform + international aid. Possible, but distant.
