Spain's Flag: Red & Gold — Heraldry, Not Symbolism
Spain's flag (rojigualda) — horizontal red-yellow-red (1:2:1) — derives from heraldic tradition, not abstract symbolism.
Origin
- 1785: Charles III chooses distinct naval ensign (confused with other Bourbon flags)
- Colors: Red & yellow = traditional Crown of Castile (gold castle) + Crown of Aragon (red bars) livery
- 1978 Constitution: Adopted as national flag (Art. 4.1)
- 1981: Current coat of arms added (pillars, crown, quarters)
What the Colors Don't Mean
- ❌ Blood & gold
- ❌ Bullfighting
- ❌ Republican vs. monarchist
Variants
- State flag: With coat of arms (gov't, military)
- Civil flag: Plain stripes (citizens, merchant ships)
- Royal Standard: Quartered Castile/León/Aragon/Navarre + Granada + Bourbon escutcheon
Regional Flags
Catalonia (senyera), Basque (ikurrina), Galicia, Andalusia — all use red/yellow/white/green combos from shared medieval heraldry.
