Why San Diego Fairy Shrimp Are Threatened
Endemic to Southern California's vernal pools, Branchinecta sandiegonensis faces a cocktail of threats:
- Habitat loss: Urban sprawl fills or fragments the seasonal pools they require.
- Water pollution: Runoff (pesticides, oil, sewage) degrades water chemistry.
- Predation: Invasive fish, bullfrogs, birds, and insects feast on them.
- Climate change: Altered rainfall patterns shrink pool duration; intense storms scour pools.
Listed threatened under the ESA (1997). Conservation focuses on pool preservation, restoration, and captive breeding.
