Rocky Gap is a AAA 4-diamond resort located two hours from both Washington and Pittsburgh. Located in the foothills of Rocky Gap State Park, the lodge offers more than 200 rooms with modern amenities and free Wi-Fi. More than just a hotel, Rocky Gap offers spa services, including warm stone massages, herbal and aromatherapy manicures, pedicures and European facials. The resort is home to the state's only Jack Nicklaus-signature golf course. Located near Lake Habeeb, the 243-acre reservoir offers some of the best fishing in the state.
Located in the western panhandle of Maryland, the Wisp Resort Hotel is perched on the slopes of Marsh Mountain, adjacent to the state's largest freshwater lake -- Deep Creek Lake. The Wisp is a smoke-free, ski-in/ski-out hotel with 67 rooms and 102 suites. Winter activities include tubing, skiing and snowmobiling, as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In spring and summer, guests come to the resort to go golfing at the championship 18-hole golf course, fly fishing, boating, mountain-boarding and mountain biking. The resort features a health club open to all guests at no extra charge and offers a number of dining choices, including DC's bar and restaurant, the Pumphouse Cafe and the Bear Claw Cafe.
On a mountainside overlooking Deep Creek Lake, the Lodges at Sunset Village are a collection of cabins large enough to accommodate 10 to 12 guests. All the cabins feature a lake view and include gas fireplaces, fully equipped kitchenettes, private outdoor hot tubs and free Wi-Fi. Guest preferring a more traditional hotel-style experience can book one of the cabin suites located in the resort's hotel on the shores of Deep Creek Lake. Aside from skiing on Marsh Mountain, travelers come to the area around Deep Creek for its fall foliage, burgeoning wine community and seasonal festivals such as the McHenry Highland Festival, which features Scottish traditional games, food and art.
Located in the forest of Catoctin Mountain Park State Park, the historic Camp Misty Mount was built in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration. The rustic cabins that make up the camp are the original buildings that were constructed from local materials. The camp is a true "getaway," as each cabin is "rustic" at best. While each unit has a light, visitors will find neither electric outlets nor kitchen facilities. An outdoor grill is supplied, but hot showers and flush toilets are a short walk away. No alcohol or pets are allowed within the state park. The location was used on the television show, "The West Wing" to double for Camp David. Interestingly enough, the real Camp David, the private retreat for the president of the United States, is also located on Catoctin Mountain; however, it is not open for visitors.
The seven "Cs" in this rustic collection of cabins comprise "cozy," "comfortable," "convenient," "contemporary," "classic," "country" and, of course, "cabins." Located in the mountain town of Flintstone, each cabin is a private accommodation built of knotty pine. In addition to sleeping quarters, you will find a small kitchen area; each cabin has a front porch. The cabins are located next to Green Ridge State Forest, where guests will find hunting, hiking and mountain biking opportunities. The facility offers the services of a board-certified massage therapist and a Reiki practitioner who makes cabin calls. Dining is available at the on-site Country Cottage Inn Restaurant, which serves three meals a day.
