Did Spain withdraw from the new world as a result of Treaty Tordesillas 1494?
Spain did not withdraw from the New World as a result of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. Instead, the treaty divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Spain and Portugal along a north-south line 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. This division gave Portugal control over Brazil, while Spain gained control over most of the rest of the Americas. The treaty did not require Spain to withdraw from any of its territories in the New World.
