Why is coral an animal?

Corals belong to the Cnidarian phylum, which includes animals like jellyfish, sea anemones, and hydra. While they might resemble plants due to their colourful formations, corals are in fact colonial organisms composed of tiny animals known as polyps. These polyps secrete calcium carbonate to form the hard structures we see as coral colonies.
