What happened when US General Scott reached Mexico City?
General Winfield Scott's forces entered Mexico City on September 14, 1847, ending the Mexican-American War. The Americans had landed at Veracruz in March and made their way inland, defeating the Mexicans at several key battles, including the Battle of Cerro Gordo and the Battle of Churubusco. After entering Mexico City, the Americans signed a peace treaty with the Mexicans, known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, in 1848. The treaty ended the war and ceded much of the present-day southwestern United States to the United States.
