According to estimates by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the total amount of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico was between 3 and 4.9 million barrels (126 to 210 million gallons). This amount is significantly larger than the previous largest marine oil spill, which was caused by the Ixtoc 1 oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico in 1979 and spilled approximately 3 million barrels (126 million gallons) of oil.
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused significant environmental damage to the Gulf of Mexico, including the death of numerous marine animals and the contamination of beaches and wetlands. It also had a major economic impact on the region, particularly on the fishing and tourism industries.
