Why is spanish spoken in Paraguay?

The official languages of Paraguay are Spanish and Guaraní, spoken by 90% and 80% of the country respectively. Due to the high incidence of bilinguals, 95% of Paraguayans are able to understand Spanish.

The Spanish language was brought to Paraguay by the Spanish conquistadors who arrived in the 16th century. The language quickly became the dominant one in the country and was used for all official purposes. Over time, Guaraní, the language of the indigenous people of Paraguay, also gained official status. Today, both languages are used in Paraguay, with Spanish being the more commonly used one.
