Why do Mexicans speak Spanish and not Mexican?

Mexican is a language. Mexicans do speak Mexican, but they also speak Spanish.

The reason for this is that Spanish was introduced to Mexico by Spanish colonizers in the 16th century, and it quickly became the dominant language of the country.

However, many indigenous languages are still spoken in Mexico today. Nahuatl, for example, is the most commonly spoken indigenous language in Mexico, with about 1.5 million speakers.

Some Mexicans also speak other languages such as English, Portuguese, or French, due to trade, tourism and migrations.
