Why did Columbus sail to Spain instead of Italy?

Christopher Columbus did not sail to Spain instead of Italy. In fact, he initially sought support from the Italian city-states of Genoa and Venice, as well as from the Portuguese court, before eventually gaining the backing of the Spanish monarchy.
