How to Travel to San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful colonial-style Mexican city, which is attracting more interest from tourists and expatriates over the past decade (see reference). Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery while strolling down a cobble-stoned street, visitors can also get involved in the local arts community, and enjoy folk music and celebrations (see reference). With these attractions and increased interest from travelers, it's not surprising that there are many ways of traveling to San Miguel de Allende.

      Fly to San Miguel de Allende. There are two airports nearby San Miguel de Allende (see reference), Aeropuerto del Bajio (BJX), and Aeropuerto Internacional de Queretaro (QRO).

      Aeropuerto del Bajio is located between Guanajuato and Leon, about 110 miles from San Miguel de Allende. Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, American Airlines and Aeromexico all fly to Aeropuerto del Bajio (see reference).

      Aeropuerto Internacional de Queretaro is about 40 miles from San Miguel de Allende. Continental Airlines and Aeromexico fly to this airport (see reference).

      Fly to Benito Juarez Airport (MEX) in Mexico City. It is easier to book a flight to Mexico city than to other airports. There are many more choices for flights. It is also easy to buy a bus ticket to San Miguel de Allende from Mexico City. A direct bus trip from Mexico city to San Miguel takes around four hours and costs about $36. (See reference).

      Take a bus from your port of entry to San Miguel de Allende.

      Aeropuerto del Bajio and Aeropuerto de Queretaro have shuttle buses running from the airport to San Miguel de Allende. Ask the staff at the information desk in the airport where you can catch the bus. The trip takes around 1 1/2 hours and costs around 30 USD (see reference).

      Mexico City's airport has buses running to Queretaro. Buy a ticket for San Miguel de Allende and transfer to another bus at Queretaro bus station to complete the trip (see reference). Book a ticket for a direct route (directo), to avoid time-wasting stops along the way (see reference). A direct trip should take around four hours and cost $36 (see reference).

      If you are traveling to San Miguel de Allende from the United States, you can cross the border at Laredo/Nuevo Laredo and take a direct bus to San Miguel de Allende (see reference).
