For more than 35 years, Instituto Allende has offered a Master of Fine Arts program that is endorsed by the University of Guanajuato, which makes it a good choice for foreign students interested in pursuing an artistic career in Mexico. Instituto Allende offers both temporary and permanent workshops in addition to its established Masters' program. Permanent workshops include creative silver work, Mexican weaving, drawing and intuitive painting. Temporary workshops offered by the institute include painting and watercolor sessions with guest artists Silvia Velazquez, Marsha Stonehouse, Sam Worthen and Doug Mays. During the summer, Instituto Allende has Mexican arts and crafts programs for children lasting from one to eight weeks.

MexArt is an art, dance and language school with programs geared for teenagers who work to develop artistic skills while experiencing a deep cultural immersion into Mexican traditions. In this art program, students choose one art form as a focus, such as painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking, welding, drawing or silver jewelry making. They may choose one or two elective courses, which include metal sculpture, creative writing and community service. Parents are invited to attend some of the courses offered in the first week of the program, and are provided housing arrangements separate from student housing.

Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, Edina Sagert has lived and traveled for extended periods of time in the Indian subcontinent, South America, Southeast Asia, the United States, and Mexico. She has a degree in graphic arts, and is a watercolor artist and professional art instructor. Her watercolor workshops are held in San Miguel de Allende year-round for all levels of experience.
Beginning students learn a loose technique in a small palette to become familiar with watercolor as a medium. Intermediate students are encouraged to experiment with mixed media using oil pastel, pencil, ink and ink washes with watercolor. Students choose to paint landscapes, abstract forms and still life, while learning the technical aspects of watercolor painting, such as color and composition. All workshops last five days and must be paid six weeks prior to the starting date.
