Why was the site of San Juan Batista chosen?

The site of Mission San Juan Batista was chosen in Spanish Colonial California around 1797 for being near an Ohlone village in a defensible position with access to resources like redwood (for lumber), limestone (for making concrete) and a perennial stream.
