Strait of Florida: Gateway for the Gulf Stream

The Strait of Florida (also called Florida Straits) is the ~166 km (103 mi) wide passage between the Florida Keys and Cuba. It connects the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The powerful Gulf Stream—a western boundary current—exits the Gulf through this strait, flowing northeast along the U.S. East Coast before crossing the North Atlantic.
