Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Today: Active Parish and Living Museum

Founded in 1772 by Saint Junípero Serra as the fifth of 21 California missions, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa remains a vibrant center of community life in downtown San Luis Obispo.

Current Status

• Active Catholic Parish: Daily/weekend Masses, sacraments, ministries. Parishioners worship in the historic church.
• Museum & Gift Shop: Exhibits on Chumash life, mission era, artifacts (vestments, tools, art). Self-guided or docent tours.
• Architecture: Restored adobe church (1793–1819) with distinctive L-shaped nave, tile roof, bell tower (campanario). Garden courtyard.
• Grounds: Plaza, fountain, historic rose garden, mission-era walls. Adjacent to Mission Plaza (community events, farmers market).

Living History
