Loreto, Mexico Vacations

Loreto in Baja California, Mexico, is a picturesque colonial village on the Sea of Cortez with sandy beaches and rare marine and desert environments. Whale-watching is a favorite pastime of tourists, as is sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving on reefs, hiking in the mountains and exploring the fragile desert ecology. There are a number of old missions, and towns and buildings dating from colonial Mexico. Loreto has a world-class tennis center and a challenging 18-hole golf course.
  1. Posada De Las Flores

    • Posada De Las Flores is on the village square and is a meticulous restoration of a traditional colonial inn. All furnishings are reproductions of 18th century Mexico and the rooms and junior suites are air-conditioned with satellite TV and private baths. This is a couples-only boutique hotel with a glass-bottom swimming pool in the roof garden and complimentary American breakfast. The hotel has two bars, including a tapas bar and two restaurants that serve Mexican specialties and Italian food. It is next door to Nuestra Señora de Loreto Mission and Museum--the mission building dates from 1752 and is still in use. The village has shops and the Islas Coronados are just offshore--a 20-minute panga ride to hiking, beach-combing, snorkeling and swimming.
