If you are interested in exploring a rare treat that highlights the natural beauty of this state, then you will want to visit one of the many hot springs sporadically located throughout New Mexico. According to the New Mexico Tourism Department, this state features a total of 13 hot spring destinations; most of which are within a short drive from cities and towns. Keep in mind that visiting most hot springs requires a hike through mountainous or rough terrain, thus you should plan to wear hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. If you don't feel like spending your days driving from one hot spring to the other you can choose between 11 different resorts and hotels within the Jemez Spring area, which will place you in the center of all the major hot springs. Rooms at these hotels can book quickly during the summer months, and it is recommended that you reserve a space at least three weeks in advance. Keep in mind that most hot springs do not offer any on-site facilities and they are maintained by state forest organizations.
If you enjoying skiing, consider taking a vacation to Taos Ski Valley in the Taos Mountains. This 1,294 acre ski resort features a total of 110 skiing trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers and a peak lift elevation of just under 12,000 feet. The New Mexico Tourism Department recommends Taos Ski Valley for its large slopes that are never overcrowded. If you have never skied or if you need to brush up on your slope skills, you can take a private lesson at the on-site Snow Sports School. Nearly 100 hotels, villas and small resorts are scattered throughout the valley, providing ample lodging choices without seeming overcrowded or too touristy. Ski tickets range in price according to age and season. The discount season runs from the end of March to the beginning of April, which is not very long; however, you can enjoy deeply discounted slope and lodging rates during this time. Special events are held on Taos Mountain throughout the year, including music and wine festivals as well as various ski competitions. Located less than three hours from Albuquerque, Taos Ski Valley is easy to get to and features exciting outdoor activities year-round.
The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway is an 83-mile loop that winds its way through mountain ranges, valleys and man-made wonders. Built around Wheeler Peak, which is the highest elevation in New Mexico soaring over 13,000 feet into the sky, you will be escorted throughout some of the most interesting historical and cultural sights within this state. Most visitors begin their journey at Taos Plaza, which is located in Taos, New Mexico. Driving on highway 64 north you will encounter Hondo Valley, which offers unique vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges. This byway then takes you on state road 522 north through Questa, which features numerous cultural shops and artist stands. Continuing on highway 38 east you will pass Red River, which features a small western town enhanced by old-western saloons as well as outdoor activities such as snowboarding and hiking trails. Highway 38 east also takes you through Eagle Nest Lake, which features some of the highest concentration of trout and salmon in the United States. If you enjoy fishing you will want to spend an entire day on the waters of Eagle Nest Lake. Located throughout the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway you will find numerous hotels and small resorts. Although this route can be done in a single day, visitors should plan to spend three or four days exploring all the activities and sights of The Enchanted Circle.
