Closest Ocean to New Mexico: The Pacific, 800 Miles Away

New Mexico is a landlocked state in the US Southwest. It does not border any ocean.

• Closest point: Pacific coast near Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Sonora, Mexico — ~800 miles (1,300 km) west of New Mexico's western border (near Lordsburg/AZ line).
• From Albuquerque: ~850 miles (1,370 km) to San Diego; ~950 miles to Los Angeles.
• From Santa Fe: ~870 miles to San Diego.

Why Not the Gulf of Mexico?

Gulf Coast (Texas) is ~600 miles from eastern NM—but the Pacific is closer to the state's western border. The Continental Divide runs through NM; waters west flow to Pacific, east to Gulf/Atlantic.

Historical Note

New Mexico was part of Mexico until 1848 (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo). The Pacific coast of Alta California was Mexican territory—so historically, NM had Pacific access via the Camino Real and later the Santa Fe Trail to California.

• Fly: 1.5–2 hours from Albuquerque (ABQ) to LAX/SAN/PDX.
