What followed independence from Spain in 1821?

After independence, Mexico established a republican system for 26 of their years as an independent country. Following that was the French Intervention(1861-1867), during which Mexico was occupied by French troops. Then came the Second Mexican (American) Empire with Emperor Maximilian I ruling. The Empire lasted three year as Mexico regained independent rule overthrew.
